In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Rimba Ilmu Botanical Garden at Universiti Malaya, we invite you to step away from the urban wilderness and adventure into a forest of knowledge.
Established in 1974, Rimba Ilmu has transformed from a wild ‘belukar’ into a thriving conservation site with around 1,700 plant species. Initially a teaching facility for biology students, it opened to the public in 1997, offering a near-authentic rainforest experience in the city.
Discover the significance of our rich flora & fauna through the lens of Malaysia's top scholars. Join us this Merdeka season as we pay tribute to this haven of natural education.
Sebelum Belukar jadi Rimba, ataupun Rimba dijadikan Belukar.
Mari kita menghayati rezeki kehidupan di Khatulistiwa.
“Like a door opening onto a previously unknown landscape, the opening of the Rimba Ilmu gives us a new perspective. lt requires those of us who will over the next decades determine the policies of the new botanic garden to understand both the
potential and the limitations of the area upon which must grow both the plants and the buildings that will comprise the institution.”

Research Themes for The University of Malaya Botanic Garden (1974)
A vibrant and thought-provoking art exhibition masterminded by the enchanting, Ummi Junid - where she explores the transformative power of natural dyes created from leftovers collected from the markets of the city. Giving a new life to discarded resources and instilling a paradigm shift in our society's relationship with waste.
Our research and experimentation will be showcased at Pasar Chow Kit, where the project was born. The vibrant market will serve as inspiration for the installations that resonate with all city dwellers, regardless of age or social status, fostering a movement towards sustainability and artistic innovation.
Through this project, we challenge the status quo and invite the local community to join us in reducing food waste and embracing a more conscious lifestyle.
How can art contribute to alleviating the problem of wastefulness? Could these discarded leftovers still have a purpose other than returning to the compost heap for fertilisers? What if we transmute the organic wastes into natural dyes? Colouring the city with the forgotten resources on fabrics that veils the hearts and the stories of Kuala Lumpur.

In the summer of 2021, I decided to step away from city life due to the pandemic lockdown and fully immerse myself in nature. My journey led me to Kemensah, Kuala Lumpur, where I trained under a veteran commando trained by the British pre-Independence. I was honing my survival skills and preparing for potential extreme situation of a possible zombie breakout or a nuclear post apocalypse future, judging by the news.
In my role as the Guardian of the Forest at Kem Isi Rimba, I was responsible for ensuring the safety of the camp and its visitors. This involved safeguarding a 20-year-old, 11-hectare jungle camp, caring for the camp's dogs and horses, and leading jungle treks. I also worked on river conservation efforts, maintaining and constructing camp infrastructure using natural materials, and serving as a paintball marshal, managing equipment and gear maintenance. Safe guarding the visitors and the nature all the whilst personally responsible for the care of a sick elderly, Sarjan (90 years old) whom I have dubbed my Don Quixote.
During my training, I was involved in a film project set in the camp, where I built a primitive village entirely from natural resources within a strict 10-day deadline. Working with a small team of seasoned individuals, we constructed various structures, including castles for a village chief and his rival, a throne stage, a gladiator ring, several small huts for extras, and a marketplace with plenty of merchant stalls. Additionally, we built a 15-foot tall, 40-foot long wall for the village's perimeter, later repurposed for another location where I constructed a lake dock to accommodate a four-person raft. Collaborating with the native Orang Asli tribe for bamboo and wood procurement, we successfully completed this project, known as Komodo Village.
In 2022, I was recruited to support the development of an off-grid permaculture farm in Bentong, Pahang. My duties included building a doomsday bunker and an emergency safe house, managing solar power and hydro pump water systems, constructing infrastructure, caring for livestock, and cultivating vegetables and fruits.
Currently, I work as a freelance permaculture designer, partnering with small-scale farmers such as Tiga Biri Perak, Soul Soil, and Post Ark, among others.

"In this episode, Wang Rou fantasizes about protecting his family from terrorists and internet trolls, fabricating paranoid threats from the outside in order to strengthen their unity. When this strategy backfires, he requests that recording devices be around him at all times, to substitute the all-knowing God his mother believes in.

The basis of “Oi! Bagun La.” features an interplaying of digital, performance and installation art stylised in partial tribute to seminal Taiwanese endurance artist Tehching Hsieh, Malaysian artists Dill Malik, Chi Too and post-internet conceptualist Tan Ray Tat. The installation and performance consists of; the artist’s character, a bed, an alarm clock, a cell phone and a vocal and written abstract poetic narration. It is exhibited in two hour allotments during the exhibition period and can be viewed live or through a variety of publicly available streaming portals. The work itself is a transparent personification of complacency. It is intended as not only as critique of art, artists and the Malaysian art community but also, in part, aspects of the human condition and our species as a whole.

The work itself is a critique of the artist’s creative prostitution. Willingness to work with an explotationary contract for the ability to continue funding his creative state and the artist’s prioritization of his financials that often means eating cheap instant packaged foods just so they could get a better quality of the preferred mediums. It’s a statement on how often exposures are used as payment for artistic products and how some even view these creative individuals less deserving of the wages since they take pleasure in their craft. In this exercise, the “Garathoan” will be following the steps of Andy Warhol but instead of eating the hamburger, a symbol of the american working class cuisine; he would instead be eating as much instant noodles as he can within the allocated one hour.
